Here are some day trip adventures you can take from San Diego! With a tank of gas, or a day bus/trolley pass, you can have a budget adventure! Within 2 hours of downtown San Diego you can find beaches, harbor, bay, Mexico, mountains, desert, Disneyland and Los Angeles! You can get there by car, bus, train or trolley!
Below are some ideas for day trips, road trips and getaways from San Diego-
  • WEST - to the west is the coast and Pacific Ocean. The 'PCH/Highway 101', the 'Pacific Coast Highway' offers the perfect relaxed scenic drive.
  • SOUTH - To the south is the border of Mexico, inviting you to visit the North Baja cities of Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Tecate, Mexicali and San Felipe!
  • NORTH - To the north are Orange and Los Angeles Counties, with everything from Disneyland to Hollywood!
  • EAST - To the east is the backcountry of San Diego, from small villages, to the mountains and desert.

 


From Downtown San Diego you can go west to the beaches in 10-15 minutes,
south to Mexico in less than 20 minutes, East to the mountains in 1 hour,
and another half hour to the desert, or North to Disneyland, L.A. and Hollywood in 2hours!

In San Diego

Take the 'Coaster' from downtown San Diego at the AMTRAK station to 'Oceanside' and visit 'Cafe 101'.

Take the 'Blue Line Trolley' to San Ysidro and the border of Mexico at Tijuana.

Head east to the desert hotpsrings town of 'Jacumba'.
You can go out Highway '8', taking a sidetrip to Cuyamaca for breakfast, circling up for a stop at mount Laguna for a breathtaking view of the Anza Borrego Desert, before heading back east down the mountainside to Jacumba.

to MEXICO-
From San Diego you can do a number of daytrips into Mexico.
Here are nearby cities in North Baja Mexico reachable in a day's drive-

  • Tijuana - 20 minutes - South on Highway 5 to the 'San Ysidro' Border Crossing. Park on the USA side and walk over the border, or take the San Diego Trolley to the border, and walk over the bridge to the pedestrian gate.
  • Rosarito - 45 minutes - South of Tijuana and the San Diego border, Rosarito is on the beach 20 minutes south of Tijuana.
  • Ensenada - 90 minutes- On the coast south of Tijuana 90 minutes.
    • Guadalupe Valley 2 hours- 20 minutes north and east of Ensenada is the wine region of the 'Guadalujpe Valley'.
  • Tecate - 55 minutes- heading east of downtown San Diego on 'G' Street onto Highway 94 leaving the cityh behind, and heading out into the backcountry of San Diego, through the villages of Jamul, Dulzura, Barrett, you will be at the border of Tecate in 55 minutes.
  • Mexicali - 2 hours - East of the San Diego/Tijuana border, is the desert city of Mexicali, south of the border of Calexico, California.
  • San Felipe - 4 hours - 2 hours south of Mexicali on the Sea of Cortez and the Gulf of California.

North to Orange County & Los Angeles-
Highways '5' & '15' can be a nightmare of traffic! Try a train ride up the coast on AMTRAK!
Or relax, slow down and cruise up the Pacific Coast Highway '101'! Stop in Oceanside at 'Cafe 101'!

  • ARIZONA - Phoenix is a 5 hour drive and Yuma is 3.

  • NEVADA - Las Vegas is a five hour drive up highway '15', while Laughlin is a slightly longer,
    but more scenic drive beginning with Highway 8 East.

  • Mountains - Mount Laguna is the highhest point in San Diego at 6000 feet, while Palomar Mountain is the host for the Palomar Observatory.

  • Desert - Anza Borrego, Jacumba

  • Catalina Island - Try taking AMTRAK to San Juan Capistrano, a taxi to Newport, then a ferry to Catalina.
